Economic development. What exactly does that mean? I hear that question rather frequently when asked about our organization. While the definition varies slightly depending on whom you ask or what you read, the true meaning is perhaps simpler.
My son recently started walking. For months we’ve watched as he stood and took a step forward only to fall right back on his bottom. Finally, after months of anticipation (and moments of panic at the realization that he will soon be getting into everything), he walked across the room and into the open arms of his sister. We all screamed and laughed with joy and someone had a few tears in their eyes (fairly certain it wasn’t me).
Watching my children made me realize that the heart of economic development is the desire to create a better tomorrow. Leaving our communities better than we found them and ensuring that the future generation has even more opportunities for growth and happiness than we did.
We investors do not donate our time and resources because we have plenty of each, we take part in this organization knowing that our contributions now are necessary for an exponentially brighter future. Economic development is a long process. Do we always see instant results from our efforts? No. Sometimes it feels like we stand up only to fall right back down. However, those times when we see our efforts pay off, it feels like we stood up and walked into the open arms of our neighbors.
Thank you for your continued support of this organization and our efforts.
Very truly yours,
President, Hancock County Economic Development Board of Directors
