If you are reading this then you already know, it’s newsletter time. Before I drone on and lose your attention, I want to express deep gratitude, both personally and on behalf of this organization, to our executive director, Terry Pope. As you know, Terry will be retiring in June of this year. During his tenure with our organization, Terry has built numerous relationships, led the creation and implementation of our strategic plan, and spearheaded our recent Business Plan Grant program, just to name a few. Not to mention, he’s made my job pretty easy.
Our Business Plan Grant program resulted in awarding a $10,000 grant to both WCAZ Radio and Sutter Produce. While some might think this is small potatoes (forgive the pun), I believe the creation and growth of these entrepreneurial businesses are essential to the economic growth of our county.
Many view large moments as the only creators of positive change. Big decisions such as macroeconomic policy changes or a sizeable manufacturer relocating to the area are often viewed by some as the only means of getting things headed in the right direction. I, however, have come to believe that positive change is instead the result of the slow accretion of small decisions. Do I help a stranger in need? Do I buy locally or drive an hour to save a few bucks? Do I give my time to civic organizations, even though there are so many other things that need my time?
Seemingly small decisions, when compounded over time, are what really make up who we are and what we can accomplish.
I’m sure I heard someone wiser than myself utter this last line, but it is important to focus on the things that we can change…the rest will follow suit.
Very truly yours,
